Founder and Director of Hopes and Actions Foundation | Wala Mohammed

 

Wala is a highly experienced professional in ICT Policy and digital rights research. She has Bachelor’s degree in Information Management Systems from Ahfad University for Women, and an Advanced Diploma in Internet Governance from the Diplo Foundation.


She managed IT projects within the government, development, telecom, and banking sectors.  She has strong research skills and published a couple of papers, including “Sudan’s ICT Illiteracy Amid COVID-19 Lockdown” in 500 words magazine, “COVID-19 exposes the damage of the ex- regime’s empowerment policy on ICTs and the impact of US sanctions against Sudan” at African Internet Rights Organization. As well as she co-authored Sudan Country Report at the Global Information Society Watch.

As part of Hopes & Actions, she led a research that aimed to examine the impact of economic sanctions on the gender digital divide in Sudan, as well as the online gender-based violence as a barrier to women’s right to online participation, and freedom of expression.  Wala has been selected to be one of the young leaders in the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) RLC East Africa in Kenya.

Wala also became part of the IFA network in Germany in 2019, where she completed three months internship at the German Digital Opportunities Foundation which focuses on building educational platforms that aim to advance the digital skills of women, children, disadvantaged young adults, and senior citizens. She was selected to be one of the young leaders in the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) RLC East Africa in 2017.
